Troy Cusens: Ex Rebels bikie jailed for violent assault of girlfriend

Well-known former bikie figure Troy Cousens unleashed a gutless post-bender assault on his own girlfriend who he accused of stealing his precious drug stash.

Violence against women: Australia is facing an epidemic worse than terrorism

A former bikie leader who broke his girlfriend’s wrist in a drug-fuelled fit of rage before pushing her down a flight of stairs and grabbing her by the neck, will remain behind bars.

Ex-Mt Druitt Rebels president Troy Cusens, 43, was jailed for up to 14 months over a violent attack on his partner at their Marsden Park home last August after being convicted of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Cusens was convicted over the attack which erupted on the afternoon of August 30 after he accused his girlfriend of stealing his drugs.

When she denied this, the colourful former bikie grabbed the woman forcefully by her wrists, causing a fracture to her left wrist, before pushing her down a flight of stairs.

The court heard Cusens then grabbed the woman by her neck, causing bruising and swelling, before demanding she come with him to buy more drugs.

In a state of fear and excruciating pain, the woman accompanied Cusens to find drugs, before telling a friend about the attack, who then called for an ambulance.

Cusens appealed his sentence at Parramatta District Court on Thursday, with his lawyer Leonardo Premutico requesting an Intensive Corrections Order be imposed in lieu of a full-time jail sentence.

Mr Premutico argued that the injuries inflicted by Cusens were made more substantial given the victim’s various health conditions, which made her more susceptible to broken bones.

He said the assault consisted of pushing and pulling the victim, rather than punching, kicking or headbutting her.

Who’s who in the bikie underworld?

However, the Crown Prosecutor said the incident had resulted in considerable pain and fear for the victim and noted that Cusens had shown little remorse for his actions.

The court heard Cusens had been with his girlfriend for just three months when the assault took place, and was high on a cocktail of cocaine and xanax after attending a party the night before.

It was heard Cusens had no history of domestic violence, but a conviction for intimidating a shopkeeper in 2017.

Judge Christopher Craigie noted the jail sentence was “onerous” but proportionate to Cusens'’s offending.

“Where men use their superior strength, and in some cases the emotional dependence of their female partners as a means to terrorise them or get their way … it is classically a gross abuse of physical and social power. It is not to be tolerated,” he said.

“The sentences imposed here are reflective of those concerns and the need to deter this kind of offending.

“He will certainly have to learn never to raise his hand against anyone again, certainly not a domestic partner.”

The appeal was unsuccessful, and with time already served, Cusens will be eligible for release on parole in April.
