A western Sydney man has been refused bail over his alleged role in the botched kidnapping of the brother of NRL legend Ben Elias in Sydney’s inner west this year.
Tasi Andrew All, 27, of Quakers Hill, faced Blacktown Local Court on Thursday, after being charged with a string of offences over the alleged attempting kidnapping of Sydney businessman Joe Elias in Drummoyne in March.
Police allege Mr Elias was forced by two men into a Toyota Hilux on Victoria Rd after they had staged a crash with his car just before 5pm on March 6.
Mr Elias managed to escape and the two men allegedly fled the area on foot.
Police allege a group of men plotted to kidnap Mr Elias by crashing into his car and holding him for ransom.
The court heard Mr All, a construction worker, was allegedly involved in the coordination and the planning of the kidnap attempt, but not the physical kidnapping itself.
The prosecution told the court that the alleged kidnapping was “highly organised” and was planned over a “prolonged period”.
It was also heard that the prosecution had obtained telephone intercepts, recordings and CCTV footage, which would form the basis of their case against Mr All.
Mr All was arrested on August 20 with being an accessory before the fact to taking/detaining in company with intent to get an advantage and occasioning actual bodily harm, possessing an unauthorised pistol and participating in a criminal group and contributing criminal activity.
He was formally refused bail during a prior court appearance
Police further allege business owner Ali Abdulrahman, 39, of Luddenham, oversaw the alleged kidnapping of Mr Elias and was involved in plotting the attempt with Kaio Pula, 40, of Mt Pritchard.
Mr Abdulrahman is charged with taking or detaining in company with intent to get an advantage (occasioning actual bodily harm), attempting to take or detain in company with intent to get an advantage (occasioning actual bodily harm) and knowingly direct activities of a criminal group.
Mr Pula faces the same offences but is charged with participating, not directing, a criminal group.
Their matters remain before the courts.
Mr All will next face Penrith Local Court on November 27.
