Some suburbs in Sydney’s west offer, on average, fuel at 10c a lire cheaper than petrol stations in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Compare The Market analyst Chris Ford said fuel prices in western Sydney were generally cheaper due to increased competition and the number of independent service stations.
“Prices can vary due to a large range of factors such as more competition for customers and independent stations setting lower prices,” he said.
“The reason some suburbs have cheaper prices can also be due to an increased amount of stations and more competition.
“Often a cluster of stations close together can make petrol stations fight for consistent customers.
“Western Sydney fuel prices have generally been cheaper than other Sydney regions over the last two quarters, with the average price difference more than 10 cents a litre in some western Sydney suburbs.”
Compare The Market analysis of which suburbs had the cheapest fuel revealed South Granville is often one of the cheapest areas and suburbs such as North St Marys, Guildford West and Villawood also rank near the top for suburbs with consistently cheap petrol.
The western Sydney suburbs of Doonside, Kemps Creek and St Marys also featured in the top 30 cheapest suburbs over the last two quarters and consistently rank among the cheapest for petrol.
Mr Ford said independents play a large role in regards to petrol prices and that was why historically western Sydney has cheaper fuel prices.
“Major retailers are more prevalent in the east and there are more independents in the west and data has shown that independents can help drive prices down,” he said.
“There are a large number of independent stations in western Sydney, which could be why there a cheaper prices on average.
“The major retailers have a presence in western Sydney of course, but the increased competition from independents can keep prices lower on average than some of the stations in central Sydney.
