A man charged over the alleged gang stabbing of three teens at a Northmead house party last year has avoided jail over a separate stealing offence in Mt Druitt.
Steven Tietie, 20, of Colyton, faced up to 14 years in jail after admitting to stealing a backpack from a young man enjoying a coffee outside a convenience store in Dawson Mall on September 6 last year.
Tietie pleaded guilty to one count of stealing from a person, admitting to snatching a backpack containing a laptop from the young man at the 7/11 store.
Police said Tietie and a group of five other males approached the young man just after 10.30pm and asked him for the time before one of the men grabbed his backpack before it fell to the ground.
Tietie grabbed the backpack from the ground and fled the scene, stashing the bag in a bin in Dawson Mall.
A short time later, the victim spoke to one of the young males, asking for his laptop back. The man was handed back his laptop after handing over $20 to the group.
Police arrested Tietie at his Colyton home on September 30. A 17-year-old male was also charged and remains before the courts. Four other males are yet to be charged.
At Mt Druitt Local Court today, Tietie’s defence said his role in the crime was an act of “impulsivity and immaturity”.
“His role was very limited to picking up the bag which was already on the ground,” the defence said.
“He was acting on impulse.”
The court heard Tietie had a clean criminal record and was a regular churchgoer.
In sentencing, Magistrate Stephen Corry said criminal activity at Dawson Mall needed to be deterred.
He urged Tietie to consider the fear felt by the victim.
“Put yourself in the position of that young man in Dawson Mall having a coffee when he was confronted by people,” Magistrate Corry said.
“This man is a similar age to you.
“Think about how terrifying that would be, and then having all his belongings taken.”
Tietie was placed on a Community Corrections Order for 12 months.
The court heard Tietie had recently been charged over the stabbing of three teens at a house party on August 3, 2019.
Tietie faces three counts of reckless wounding in company after he allegedly gatecrashed the birthday party with a group of males at a house on Redbank Rd, Northmead, just after 10pm.
Two men, aged 19, a 20-year-old man, a 21-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy have since been charged and remain before the courts.
After an extensive police investigation, Tietie was arrested at his Colyton home on June 9.
He will face Parramatta Local Court on August 6.
