PLANS are progressing on building seniors housing at Blacktown Workers Sports Club.
The council last week supported the club’s proposal to relocate its sports fields, HE Laybutt Fields, to the back of its site at Walters Rd and build a seniors’ living village in its place.
The proposed centre will be subject to a separate development assessment process and report to the council.
Up to 800 self-contained senior dwellings and a 160-bed aged care facility could be built on the site.
President Kay Kelly said there was a need for more seniors housing in Blacktown.
“There’s so many people who want to downsize and be near family, friends and medical facilities and still stay in the local community,” she said.
“There will be a lot of walking tracks through the area and lots of landscaping to make it a desirable place to live.”
The sports fields will shift from Reservoir Rd to vacant industrial land behind the club at 217-221 Walters Rd, Arndell Park.
A concept plan shows two soccer fields and two new rugby league fields for the site. There will also be a childcare centre.
“Because of the rising cost of housing people who have young children need a reputable childcare facility …” Ms Kelly said.
Councillor Russ Dickens congratulated the club on its plans.
“Not many areas have such a progressive club and Blacktown Workers Club is supreme in terms of its sporting facilities and entertainment,” he said.
The proposal to relocate the sports fields will be forwarded to the Planning Minister for review.
