Leading by example has paid off for Blacktown City Swimming Club’s captains with 16-year-olds Matthew Galea and Madeline Franjic qualifying for the national open water championships.
Penrith local Matthew and Madeline from Quakers Hill will travel to Adelaide at the end of this month after earning a number of impressive results at the NSW state open and age open events at Penrith’s Sydney International Regatta Centre last month.
The pair’s state open results included a second in the 16 years boys 5km event for Matthew and a third-place finish for Madeline in the 16 years girls 5km.
Matthew also finished third in the 400m individual medley at the age open competition, while Madeline earned three top 10 finishes.
Blacktown City Swimming Club president Richard Galea (Matthew’s father) said the club couldn’t be more proud of the efforts of the two young leaders.
“These two young ambassadors are great role models for the younger kids in the club,” Mr Galea said.
“They attend most Friday night races where the younger kids get an opportunity to not just watch them swim but swim against them. They both often will get in the water to help the young kids with water confidence.
“Adelaide will have waves, jellyfish, all sorts of stuff, so we’re just looking for them and all of our swimmers to do their best.”
The club is based at the Blacktown Aquatic Centre and caters for swimmers of all abilities from across the Blacktown and Mt Druitt area. For more details go to blacktowncity.swimming.org.au.
