PREMIER league heavyweights Blacktown City FC will be bolstered with the return of star striker Danny Choi.
Choi had a phenomenal 2016 season that saw him etch his name into football history thanks to consistent performances, notably his wonder-goal from 70 metres against Sydney United 58 in the FFA Cup.
His performances caught the attention of Adelaide United coach Guillermo Amor who snapped up Choi as an injury replacement for Marcelo Carrusca.
The South Korean born attacker played two matches for Adelaide before succumbing to a foot stress fracture.
Blacktown head coach Mark Crittenden said another great season for Choi, who re-signed last Thursday, was imminent.
Choi attempted another long-distance goal at the Mayoral Cup match against Blacktown Spartans at Lily’s Football Centre, Seven Hills, on Sunday.
City beat the Spartans 6-0. The Spartans were relegated to division two this year.
“He was on target and probably just as far out as 70m and the keeper picked it up,’’ Crittenden said.
“I have no doubt he will try another shot like that during the season.’’
The club is preparing to open the NSW Premier season on March 12 with a win against Hakoah Sydney City East at Eastgardens.
Blacktown’s last season was peppered with milestones, with consistently strong attacking and defence in every round.
The football powerhouse side defeated Sydney United to claim the NSW Premier League championship title at Leichhardt Oval. The grand final victory was their second in three seasons.
Despite the team’s consistently strong performance, Crittenden said he was not feeling the pressure and the season would be business as usual.
“Every year is a new year, and as I said to the boys, it’s their chance to make this year their own,” he said.
“We come in with the same attitude every year. We have a good squad put together and we want to make sure we make the semi-finals every year.”
The 2017 squad will see last season’s captain Zac Cairncross pass over the title to fellow centre back Matt Lewis.
Striker Patrick Antelmi has moved on to Wollongong Wolves.
Blacktown’s first home match of the season will come in the second round when it hosts the Sutherland Sharks.
