CRICKET is a gentleman’s game for Raveesh Srivastava who likes to think that when others go low on the pitch with sledging, he goes high with sportsmanship.

“I don’t like to get caught up in that kind of stuff. I don’t want to be part of unsportsmanship,” the 17 year old said.

“Being a good sportsman develops me on and off the field. Even though I’m very competitive I prefer to have my actions be proof of how good I am, rather than be verbal and have that backfire.”

The Glenwood High School teen was recently selected for NSW combined high schools boys’ cricket team.

Raveesh, a wicketkeeper and batsman, has his eyes on the NSW under-19 side, with tryouts in November.

“Since I was four I have wanted to be a part of the Australian team — that’s always what I wanted and to make it there I want to be part of the NSW team, which I think is definitely realistic for me,” he said.

To make it, Raveesh will need to keep his form, which has seen him post 520 runs in 15 club matches and seven rep matches this season.

“I can hit that occasional big shot but I also like to sneak those ones and twos, play with the captain’s head ... it’s 90 per cent mental on the field,” Raveesh said.

“I want to show selectors that I can put the things I learn in training into practice during a game.”

He will also head to the UK in June as part of his combined high school selection.

Raveesh has been nominated for a Local Sports Star award in the Individual category. The program has five categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual, Young Sporting Spirit Team and Service to Sport.
