POLICE have charged a man with attempted murder following an alleged shooting in Sydney’s west today in which an officer shot a dog named Missy.
About 11am, police alleged a 31-year-old man was shot called to Kikori Crescent, Whalan.
Police said a 33-year-old man handed himself in St Marys Police Station about 1.30pm and was later charged with shooting at the man with intent to murder, and cause wounding and/or grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.
They said they executed a crime scene warrant at a property in Shalvey and seized a shotgun.
At 12.15pm police had swarmed a second property in nearby Pacha Pl, Shalvey, where they believed the alleged shooter and established a perimeter with two Bearcat armoured personnel from the city.
The man police were looking for, understood to be a long-time friend of the victim, was not home at the time.
As officers surrounded the home and evacuated neighbours, a resident’s dog — a part-Staffordshire terrier named Missy — lunged at police.
A senior constable drew his gun and shot Missy in the chest.

Mathew Paul, whose family owns Missy, was horrified their dog had been caught up in the police operation.
“There is a dog that wasn’t involved at the start, ended up getting shot. They’re doing their job, I guess,” Mr Paul said.

The shot man is in a stable condition at Nepean Hospital with wounds to his hand and leg.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics treated the shot man at the scene for injuries that were “not serious”.
Missy, who had puppies less than 10 days ago, was still being treated by a vet.
Footage of the aftermath of the incident showed several police officers in nearby parklands.
A drone and PolAir helicopter could also be seen flying above homes.
The man was refused bail and is due to appear before Mt Druitt Local Court tomorrow.
