Funding for the fast-tracked Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport project has been secured with this year’s NSW Budget revealing $9.2 billion is promised for the project over the next four years, with Treasurer Dominic Perrottet laying out an immediate $809,953 million cash injection this financial year.
The major transport infrastructure, now expected to be complete in 2026, was one of the only significant new funding announcements made in this year’s “recession busting” budget.
Mr Perrottet said the new metro project will “become the transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International Airport”.
“This city-shaping project will provide a major economic stimulus for Western Sydney, creating more than 14,000 jobs during construction,” he said.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance said by 2024 “Sydney will have 31 metro railway stations and a 66 kilometres stand-alone metro railway system, revolutionising the way our city travels”.
“Throughout Greater Sydney, the NSW Government is delivering quality services, new and innovative connections and important transport projects that will transform the future of mobility,” Mr Constance said.
“Game changing projects such as Sydney Metro, Parramatta Light Rail, and WestConnex are creating jobs and delivering economic benefits to local communities.”
The $9 billion Airport Metro fund is part of a $28 billion injection over the next four years for the delivery of the Sydney Metro City, Southwest and Metro West.
