A brutal attack by a group of masked men in Doonside this week has been described as “cowardly” as police hunt those responsible.

Several men armed with knives and machetes stormed a granny flat on Earle St about 1.30am on Monday morning, dragging their victim outside before repeatedly slashing and punching him.

Adam Power, 23, managed to free himself from the melee and ran to a phone box on Hill End Rd where he called police.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment for lacerations to his arms, hand and neck, which required stitches. He was released later on Monday.

Wearing a bloodied shirt and a bandage on his face, Mr Power told reporters he was sleeping in the room with two friends when he was attacked by “six or seven” men. He said he had “no clue” why he had been targeted.

“They sliced my hand, they sliced the side of my head,” he said. “They didn’t say a thing, they attacked without talking … I want to kill them.

“I was scared they were going to hurt me, my friends and my family. I wasn’t sure if my family had already been hurt by them and they came for me after that.”

Mr Power lives in a granny flat in the yard of his grandparents’ house. They and his two friends were untouched.

Detective Inspector Paul Tickner said Blacktown detectives secured the scene on Monday and investigations continued into the incident.

"The attack on the victim was a vicious, cowardly attack by numerous men hiding their identity,” he said.

“The victim appears to have been deliberately targeted."

Details regarding the appearance of the group were sketchy. Detective Insp. Tickner said police believed there was five to seven offenders.

They were all described as being aged between 19 — 24, and a mix of caucasian, Aboriginal and possibly Maori appearance, and of varying height and builds.

Most were wearing bandannas or had clothing covering their faces.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers, 1800 333 000.
