A magistrate has slammed a Doonside man over a drunken attack on paramedics calling his behaviour “one of the lowest acts”.

Damien Robinson, 43, faced Blacktown Local Court on Thursday where he was sentenced over the assault on two paramedics at Nurragingy Reserve on January 28.

Robinson appeared before Magistrate Karen Robinson, pleading guilty to obstructing or hindering and ambulance officer by an act of violence and two counts of common assault.

Police said Robinson had been drinking with friends at a park when an ambulance was called over concerns for his level of intoxication.

When paramedics arrived, police said Robinson was immediately aggressive, yelling abuse and resisting the officers.

The scene escalated when Robsinson bit a paramedic on the wrist and spat on another three times, including in his face.

Prior to being handed his sentence, Robsinson told the court his behaviour was “out of character”.

“This will never happen again. It was just out of the blue,” Robinson said.

However, Magistrate Robinson condemned his actions.

“Spitting is one of the lowest acts performed by way of assaults,” Ms Robinson said.

“All sorts of health complications can arise when someone is spat on.

“I need to send a message to the community that ambulance officers ought to be afforded protection.”

Robinson narrowly avoided full-time jail and was ordered to enter into an intensive corrections order for 10 months. He was ordered to abstain from drinking alcohol for five months.
