Luis Alberto Salgado has been behind bars since returning to Australia on a flight from Chile on February 20 of this year, when he was selected for a bag examination by Australian Border Force officers.
It will be alleged in court that trace scans of items inside the 19-year-old’s bag returned positive for cocaine.
“An x-ray examination was also conducted on a can of shaving cream and three bottles of shampoo, each showing anomalies and what appeared to be packages stuffed into each container,” the AFP said in a statement.
It is estimated the total weight of the drugs allegedly found in Salgado’s luggage totalled about 2kg.
The former Patrician Brothers Blacktown student was arrested and charged with importing and possession of a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug.
No pleas have been entered on the charges that carry a life sentence.
After nearly two months in custody defence lawyer Chaddy Mardini told Central Local Court on Wednesday his client was set to make a bail application on April 21.
