The grieving partner of a man killed in a tragic trail bike crash suffered a cruel twist of fate after being involved in a crash with a motorcyclist just one week after his death.
Jordan Gow lost her partner Jarrod Beaver, 23, when his bike crashed into a metal barricade at a reserve in Blacktown last February.
The Cranebrook woman was one of the first called to the scene at Robert Brown Reserve, but sadly, Mr Beaver could not be revived.
Tragically, Ms Gow relived the trauma of the accident just one week later when she was involved in a crash with a motorcyclist in Penrith.
Police charged her with negligent driving over hitting the vehicle after she turned in front of the rider at the intersection of High St and Evan St on February 17.
Facing Penrith Local Court for sentencing on Thursday, Ms Gow’s defence lawyer sought to have her avoid a criminal conviction over the incident.
“Just prior to this incident, Ms Gow’s partner passed away in a motorbike accident,” the defence said.
“It was cruel … she was extremely upset.
“This past year has been extremely confronting and she has dealt with a lot in the past 13 months.”
The court heard Ms Gow had suffered severe mental health issues following both crashes, and had “intrusive thoughts” of her partner’s death daily.
“She did see what happened to her partner and this had driven home the impacts of traffic accidents,” the defence said.
Magistrate James Gibson sympathised with the young woman in handing down his sentencing.
“It’s so unfortunate the accident happened in those circumstances,” Mr Gibson said.
“It would’ve been a terrible moment for you when you hit the bike rider in the context of what happened (a week) prior.
“It just created such a risk for the person on the motorcycle.
“You pulled out in front of him at an intersection …. He has to deal with the trauma of that collision as well.”
Gow was convicted and fined $500.
