Country music star John Williamson knows just how devastating drought can be.

Nicknamed “the Mallee Boy”, Williamson grew up in Quambatook in northwestern Victoria where his parents farmed wheat crops.

After finishing school, Williamson became a farmer and the family moved to Croppa Creek, near Moree, and it was there that his music career began.

He started performing at a local restaurant, where he first sang his chart-topping hit Old Man Emu.

Williamson went on to become a multi award-winning country musician, releasing his 51st album Butcherbird last month.

Joining Williamson will be country singer Graeme Connors.

The ARIA Hall of Fame inductee will headline a concert in Rooty Hill next weekend raising money for farmers and communities affected by drought.

“As an ex-farmer I have been through a horrendous drought, so I know how the farmers are struggling,” he said.

“If we can help save breeding stock from being sold then it’s very worthwhile cause.”

Country icon Kasey Chambers will also perform on the day.

The Buy a Bale concert will be held at Rooty Hill RSL by the recently named West HQ, which encompasses businesses including the RSL, Sydney Gymnastic and Aquatic Centre and the under construction Western Sydney Performing Arts Centre.

All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Buy a Bale, which supports drought-affected communities across the country.

Fans can expect to hear Williamson’s hit tracks such as True Blue, Raining on the Rock and Old Man Emu during his 30 minute set.

Joining Williamson on Sunday, September 16, will be fellow country music stars Kasey Chambers, Graeme Connors, Sara Storer and John Stephan.

The concert starts at 3.30pm and tickets can be purchased online.
