The identity of an inmate stabbed to death at a prison in Sydney’s north west on Wednesday afternoon has been revealed.
33-year-old Illawarra man Michael Black was stabbed during an incident at Parklea Correctional Centre at about 12.20pm, a jail spokeswoman has confirmed.
MTC Broadspectrum, which runs the jail, said Black was treated by St Vincent’s health staff, but died before paramedics arrived, just before 1pm.
A spokeswoman said the jail extended its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the inmate.
“Support is being provided to those impacted,” the spokeswoman said.
“We acknowledge that a full understanding will be achieved only through investigations by NSW Police and the Coroner.
“We will co-operate fully with those investigations.”
Black was due to appear at Wollongong Local Court via audiovisual link today, however his lawyer could not get in touch with him.
A court officer at one point this afternoon told the court inmates at Parklea were unable to appear on the audiovisual link as the prison “was in lockdown”.
Black was taken back into custody on February 26, after an armed robbery at a Berkeley post office, just south of Wollongong.
The incident comes less than three weeks after a riot involving at least two dozen inmates sent the jail into lockdown on April 3.
Several inmates were injured in the incident and received medical treatment. No staff were injured.
More to come.
