Food safety name and shame list: Blacktown, Penrith region

Pests, dirty kitchens and food past its used-by date are some of the food safety breaches witnessed at eateries across western Sydney. SEE THE FULL LIST.

Almost 30 eateries across the Blacktown, Mt Druitt and Penrith areas have been caught out flouting food safety and hygiene rules in the past year.

The NSW Food Authority’s Name and Shame Register has exposed the latest food safety offenders in Blacktown and Penrith City, with popular chains McDonald’s, Oliver Brown and Lone Star among them.

Since January 2020, 26 businesses in the region have received fines amounting to almost $28,000 over cleanliness, pests, failing to protect food from contamination, adding illegal preservatives and not storing food at the safe temperatures.

The NSW Food Authority publishes a list of breaches of food safety laws in its Name and Shame Register, with businesses which have been issued with a penalty notice listed on the register for 12 months.

Among the most serious offenders was Chilli Jam Thai Restaurant in Penrith. The restaurant received fines worth more than $3500 over cleanliness, contamination and accessible hand washing facilities.

Big G’s Pizzeria was hit with a $1320 fine for cleanliness breaches and failing to keep pests out.

Woodcroft Bakery was the most serious offender from the Blacktown region, fined $1540 for breaches including protecting food from contamination.

Popular food chains including McDonald’s, Bakers Delight, Oliver Brown and Lone Star also received fines.

BLACKTOWN & PENRITH EATERIES NAMED AND SHAMED

Park 4 Pizza, Penrith: 17 Jan 2020 – $1320 fine, fail to maintain the food premises to the required standard of cleanliness, fail to take all practicable measures to eradicate and prevent the harbourage of pests; and, fail to maintain all fixtures, fittings and equipment to the required standard of cleanliness.

Big G’s Pizzeria, St Marys: 12 Feb 2020 – $2640 fine, fail to store food in such a way that it is protected from the likelihood of contamination; sale of food past its use-by date; and, fail to maintain the food premises to the required standard of cleanliness.

Blacktown Quality Meats, Blacktown: 29 Apr 2020 – $1320 fine, sale of food found to contain illegal preservative (sulphur dioxide) – coarse mince – (previous warning given); sale of food found to contain illegal preservative (sulphur dioxide) – medium mince – (previous warning given); and, sale of food found to contain illegal preservative (sulphur dioxide) – fine mince – (previous warning given).

Westpoint Growers, Blacktown: 30 Apr 2020 – $440 fine, fail to store potentially hazardous food under temperature control (previous warning given).

Woodcroft Bakery, Woodcroft: 6 May 2020 – $1540 fine, fail to store food in such a way that it is protected from the likelihood of contamination (previous warning given); fail to store food in such a way that it is protected from the likelihood of contamination (previous warning given); fail to ensure a copy of the food safety supervisor certificate is kept on the premises and produced for inspection on request by an authorised officer (previous warning given); and, fail to ensure a copy of the food safety supervisor certificate is kept on the premises and produced for inspection on request by an authorised officer (previous warning given).

Breadtop, Blacktown: 15 May 2020 – $440 fine, fail to maintain all fixtures, fittings and equipment to the required standard of cleanliness (previous warning given).

L & J Islander Store, Blacktown: 18 Jun 2020 – $440 fine, fail to store potentially hazardous food under temperature control (previous warning given).

Fresh Farm Market, Mt Druitt: 24 Jun 2020 – $880 fine, fail to store potentially hazardous food under temperature control.

Jinsung Food, Seven Hills: 29 Jun 2020 – $1760 fine, sale of food labelled in contravention to Food Standards Code.

Chilli Jam Thai Restaurant, Penrith: 8 Jul 2020 – $3520 fine, fail to maintain easily accessible hand washing facilities on the food premises (previous warning given); fail to maintain the food premises to the required standard of cleanliness (previous warning given); fail to, when processing food, take all necessary steps to prevent the likelihood of food being contaminated (previous warning given); and, fail to ensure food contact surfaces of equipment is in a clean and sanitary condition.

Tregear Takeaway, Tregear: 28 Jul 2020 – $1320 fine, sale of food that is unsuitable.

Oliver Brown, Mt Druitt: 30 Jul 2020 – $880 fine, fail to maintain at or near each hand washing facility a supply of warm running water (previous warning given).

Bakers Delight, Glenmore Park: 5 Aug 2020 – $880 fine, fail to maintain the food premises to the required standard of cleanliness.

Pameer Restaurant, Blacktown: 6 Aug 2020 – $660 fine, fail to ensure copy of the food safety supervisor certificate is kept on the premises and produced for inspection on request by an authorised officer (previous warning given).

A Little Cha, Mt Druitt: 24 Sept 2020 – $660 fine, fail to ensure copy of the food safety supervisor certificate is kept on the premises and produced for inspection on request by an authorised officer (previous warning given).

Mithai Junction, Blacktown: 12 Oct 2020 – $880 fine, fail to ensure food contact surfaces of equipment is in a clean and sanitary condition (previous warning given).

McDonald’s, Mulgoa Rd Penrith: 22 Oct 2020 – $1320 fine, sale of food that is unsuitable.

Hang Bakery, Riverstone: 30 Oct 2020 – $440 fine, fail to ensure fixtures, fittings and equipment is adequate for the production of safe food and fit for their intended use.

Lone Star Rib House, Blacktown: 10 Nov 2020 – $880 fine, fail to maintain premises, fixtures, fittings, and equipment in a good state of repair and working order having regard to their use (previous warning given).
