WIMBLEDON champion Evonne Goolagong Cawley will officially open the $15âmillion Blacktown Tennis Centre Stanhope on Saturday at 11am.
The centre boasts 16 courts, spectator seating for 288 people, change rooms, office space and meeting facilities, social area and extra car parking.
The complex, at Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope Gardens, will host competitions and will be available for the community to hire. Tennis Australia participation director Paul Cammack said Blacktown Tennis Centre would be a showcase for tennis in the region.
“The facility has been built to cater for everything from local competitions right through to Davis Cup-type events,” he said.
“So it will provide amenity to the existing visitors of Blacktown Leisure Centre and access to the wider community as well.”
As part of the opening celebrations the community will be able to enjoy free access to the annual Blacktown City Family SportsFest from noon.
SportsFest is a sports festival that offers sporting activities for people of all ages to enjoy including clinics, interactive displays, appearances from sporting personalities, giveaways and prizes.
Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali encouraged residents to try the many sports activities available.
“We want to open people’s eyes to the hundreds of activities and a whole range of sports that they might not know exist,” he said.
