A man who allegedly kicked, punched and dragged his two dogs, including a puppy, in front of shocked onlookers as he walked them in Emerton will fight the charges.
Jordan Robert Maples, 26, of Seven Hills, faced Mt Druitt Local Court today, pleading not guilty to five counts of animal cruelty and one of failing to provide vet treatment.
Police say Mr Maples was taking the dogs for a walk along Popondetta Rd in Emerton just after 9am on December 27 when he allegedly became violent towards the animals.
Police allege Mr Maples held one of the dogs by its throat before holding it to the ground and hitting it several times in the head.
A short time later, witnesses allegedly saw Mr Maples dragging one of the dogs along the footpath before kneeling and punching the animal repeatedly.
He was later seen walking the dog through the Cedars Tavern carpark when he allegedly yanked the dog up by its lead and kicked it mid-flight.
The concerned bystanders called police and Mr Maples was arrested at the scene.
The dogs were seized by officers and taken to a nearby vet for treatment.
Court documents revealed the dogs were a six-month-old American staffordshire terrier and a four-year-old great dane cross.
The matter will return to court on July 14 for hearing.
