TWO words may just have the power to change your career.

Motivational speaker and author Janine Garner says the words “I can” have long been used as a powerful strategy for overcoming fear and failure, but work just as well when it comes to meeting career goals and challenges.

Garner, who is also the founder of women’s business network LBD Group, says: “Those who succeed as leaders, incredible entrepreneurs and whose stories we sit and devour, live by a very simple set of commandments.

“They recognise the inherent need to stop living in the abstract and instead bring oneself into the reality of ‘Yes, I can’.

“The power of those two words is so strong ... when we allow ourselves to trust in our own ideas, to follow through and action them, we can achieve anything.”

Garner points out ways you can apply the principles of “I can” and reap the rewards.

BELIEVE IN ME
Are your skills, values and vision aligned? Are you engaged in your purpose and passionate about what you are doing? Get clear on your “why” and commit to your purpose.

DO SOMETHING

Many people have a dream, but get lost in endless planning rather than doing. They forget to take action. Any action towards your dream can create a ripple of change, and the more you take action, the bigger the ripples.

STAY IN THE ZONE
We all know a plan is critical, but to keep heading in the direction you want to go requires focus. Staying in the zone takes determination, resilience, a hunger and a belief that what you are doing means something. It’s about doing the work, taking the right action and making the right decision.
OWN IT

Take ownership of your plan, direction and journey. There will be challenges along the way — things will not always go as planned, but what is key is how you face these challenges. Hold yourself accountable; own the highs and the lows, the results and the failures. Learn and grow.

EMBRACE THE COLLECTIVE

Be willing to connect with others who are aligned and supportive of your dreams. Look for your circle of influence and key influencers. Appreciate what others have to give and what you can contribute. It also pays to surround yourself with the right people, because nothing propagates development of great plans like a great team.
