The Blacktown RSL sub-branch has been answering the calls of numerous veterans during Covid lockdown.
The sub-branch consists of servicemen and women who provide medical, professional, pension and mental health services for veterans.
Members received multiple reports of veterans going “cold and hungry” over the recent months as well as others unable to make medical or counselling appointments.
In the last couple of weeks they have also assisted with four funerals of veterans in western Sydney.
Families of veterans have voiced their concerns on the accumulating effects of winter, social isolation and the pandemic leading to the early departure of veterans.
Bradley Lawless, President of the City of Blacktown RSL sub-Branch, said: “The City of Blacktown RSL sub-branch acknowledges the high risks of suicide and mental health issues among the defence and veteran community.
“We are taking steps to reduce their anxiety and sudden reduction of services.
“We have commenced an operation to get food and warm clothing to veterans in all parts of Sydney. At this stage our services and deliveries cover western Sydney, including Blacktown, Penrith and Windsor.”
The sub-branch is working closely with Foodbank to provide food packages to deliver to vulnerable veterans as well as with Anglicare which is offering both counselling and the delivery of fresh food and vegetables to servicemen and women.
Upon receiving a delivery of food from the sub branch, veteran Mavis Melville, said: “It’s wonderful what the RSL sub-branch is doing. Even when the pandemic isn’t going on, it’s a struggle to shop. It’s even harder with the dangers of the pandemic. I’m so thankful.”
Bradley Lawless said the sub-branch has received multiple letters and calls from members and their families and is working around the clock to get help for local veterans.
“Currently we have a 75-year-old veteran sitting at home suffering with diagnosed Covid-19. This veteran has no family and no formal support. Blacktown RSL sub-Branch and the local community is his support during this time,” said Mr Lawless.
Robert Cherry is a veteran and military police officer and upon receiving a delivery of food from the sub branch said, “in the Army the motto was with the troops and for the troops. It’s good to see they’re with the troops for life.’
