A northwest Sydney council is asking telecoms to build and operate new towers in a move to improve mobile and broadband coverage.
Blacktown City Council has announced new steps to boost mobile and broadband coverage across the region by releasing expressions of interest (EOI) to telecoms companies to build and operate towers on 13 council-owned sites.
The proposed sites include Campbell Park Reserve, Eastern Creek, Minchinbury Reserve, Hanna Reserve, Corbin Reserve, Reservoir Road, Stanhope Gardens Reserve, Blacktown International Sports Park, Douglas Reserve, Ken Birdsey Park, Rouse Road, Marsden Park, and Melonba.
The move is seen as a way to help suburbs with high-growth whose demand for reliable service has increased.
Mayor Brad Bunting said the launch was in response to a plea from the community which is desperate for better coverage.
“We’ve heard from residents and we’re acting,” he said.
“Improving connectivity, by enabling better access to mobile and broadband services, is essential, not just for daily life, but for safety, education, health and business.
“This project isn’t just about adding infrastructure, it’s about delivering it smarter. We’re focused on improving mobile access, reducing the impact on community and ensuring local land generates value that comes back to the community.”
The council will shortlist and invite telecom candidates to send through detailed bids.
Applicants have until May 7 to send an EOI.
