A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a bikie outside his home in Sydney’s west five years ago.
Olevar Merza, 30, appeared via audio-visual link at Port Macquarie Local Court on Thursday accused of murdering Adrian Buxton – who had links to the Nomad Outlaw Motorcycle Gang – outside his Colyton home on the evening of May 19, 2016.
During his brief appearance before Magistrate Georgina Darcy, Merza was told by his lawyer Ian Love that he was not eligible to make an application for release from custody because he was currently serving jail time for other offences until 2028.
“You‘re not eligible for release for a number of years and there is no bail application today,” Mr Love said, to which Merza replied ”Yes.”
He has been charged with murder and knowingly directing the activities of a criminal group.
Police allege Merza, who was arrested on Thursday at the Mid-North Coast Correctional Facility, was one of two men who allegedly confronted Mr Buxton, 31, outside his driveway before he was shot a number of times in an execution-style murder.
It is then alleged the pair fled in a vehicle that picked them up a short distance from the home.
A subsequent review of CCTV footage identified three vehicles travelling together in the area at the time of the alleged murder.
Almost five years after the shooting, NSW Police offered a $1 million reward in April for information into the death.
Despite detectives finding a gun and a car linked to the alleged murder, they struggled to find those responsible.
A subsequent review of CCTV footage identified three vehicles travelling together in the area at the time of the alleged murder.
Based on Mr Love‘s instructions that he was not eligible to make a release application, Mr Merza was formally refused bail.
He will next appear at Penrith Local Court on August 6, where he will be represented by Kiki Kyriacou Criminal Lawyers.
