Residents of a western Sydney suburb are set to get dozens of little neighbours, with a new childcare centre on its way to a site previously occupied by a house.
The two-storey childcare centre, planned for 246 Metella Rd, Toongabbie, has been in the works since 2021, when Amanda Taoukto lodged the original plans with the Blacktown City Council.
The initial development application, approved in January 2023, outlined plans to demolish an existing one-storey house and garage on the site to make way for a two-storey childcare centre with 43 children.
The property later went under the hammer, selling for more than $1.5m at auction.
Since then, the house has been demolished and an applicant by the name of Ranit Sharma has lodged a modification application, seeking, among other things, to up the number of enrolments to 47.
A statement of environmental effects, compiled by Pivotal Planning on behalf of Mr Sharma, states an increase in enrolments would not have any drastic impact on the surrounding residential area.
“The slight increase in children does not generate an additional adverse acoustic or traffic impact,” plans state.
“The proposed modification remains compliant with the applicable parking controls of Blacktown Council.
“The proposed modification does not significantly alter the original approved consent and is primarily seeking amendments to comply within the approved building envelope. The general layout, location remain the same.”
Other modifications proposed include reconfiguring the basement and ground levels, increasing the size of the first floor, adjustments to avoid the underground sewer line and changes to the front fence to include a gate.
The childcare centre will have a total of eight educators to cater for children up to five years old.
The site is close to the K-10 Ebenezer Christian College and a homemaker centre.
