Having a scholarship to help her through the past four years of school has been much more than just a financial benefit for Lana Gan.
The Randwick Girls High School Year 12 student was in the first group of girls to receive a scholarship in 2016 from the Harding Miller Education Foundation (HMEF) — a charity that helps to bridge the gap of educational and career opportunities for Australian girls who are facing financial disadvantage.
While the financial aid has been a huge help for Lana, which includes a laptop, tutoring and support for other school expenses, she said the mentoring that comes with the scholarship has been one of the biggest rewards.
“I don’t think that I would be trying as hard as I am now if I didn’t have the scholarship,” she said. “Just knowing that someone believes in you, it helps so much.”
Bankstown Girls High School Year 12 student Shaza Ayoubi, who also received a HMEF scholarship in 2016, said it has helped her feel more confident going in to her final HSC exams.
She said having a laptop to use for school, instead of having to share the home computer with her five sisters, has been the best part of the scholarship for her.
“I use my laptop every single day and as vice captain I’m writing lots of speeches and making presentations and doing lots of research at school,” Shaza said. “I haven’t seen a scholarship that actually gives you as much as this one does.”
Prairiewood High School’s Year 12 school captains Louisse Madden and Lillian Pham credit their four-year HMEF scholarships for inspiring them to pursue their dream careers. Louisse said the face-to-face tutoring helped her gain the confidence to want to study veterinary science at university.
“The difference between my grades in Year 9 to now, you would not believe it was the same person,” she said.
Applications for HMEF’s 2020 scholarships are open now until Sunday, September 22 for girls across Australia who attend a public school and will be in Year 9 next year.
The scholarships provide approximately $20,000 worth of tools and support over the course of four years.
HMEF executive director Cara Varian said the foundation will be giving out approximately 120 scholarships next year, making it their biggest year yet.
“We are looking for people who are really driven and excited about doing well at school and university,” she said.
Lillian, who plans to study medicine to become a doctor, encouraged girls to apply.
“Your financial position shouldn’t hinder your potential,” she said. “Take the leap — it opens up a wide range of opportunities and you meet wonderful girls as well.”
