Former West Coast player Andrew Gaff will aim to find some serenity this month as he puts the footy boots on for the first time since his retirement.
The two-time All Australian who played 280 games for the Eagles will play for Bonnie Doon on May 24 against King Valley in a one-off game for the Ovens and King side.
Bonnie Doon, the town made famous by the classic movie The Castle, has been one of the powerhouses in the league for the past two years.
In 2023, the team won its first flag in 14 years and was on track last year for back-to-back titles, winning its first 18 games, before being eliminated in straight sets in the finals.
One of the premiership players in 2023 was Morgan Evans who is now the current treasurer at the club.
He is good mates with Gaff and was instrumental in getting the 32-year-old to the Bombers.
“I’ve been best mates with him through school,” Evans said.
“Myself, him and one of our other mates, we haven’t played together since school so we thought we better have a game together.
“He was keen to do it at Bonnie Doon.”
Gaff attended school with Evans in Kew and was an Oakleigh Chargers player before being drafted to West Coast.
He still lives in Perth and will fly in for the weekend, which will include training on the Thursday night, the game and a sportsman’s dinner on Saturday and a golf day on Sunday.
Gaff will be joined at the sportsman’s dinner by dual Olympian rower Nicholas Purnell who is also good friends with Evans.
“It’s a full weekend of festivities and hopefully provides a bit back to the community,” he said.
“It’s good for us to play footy with each other but more importantly it’s about getting people to a Bonnie Doon game that they may not necessarily go to before.”
The game starts at 2pm with the dinner to begin at 5.30pm.
