US politics live: Donald Trump finally loses patience with Vladimir Putin, warns Russian leader must come to the table
Donald Trump’s patience is on its final straw, with the US President revealing Vladimir Putin “trusts no one” but must still come to the table before a massive US power play.
Welcome, again, to our live coverage of US politics.
President Donald Trump has declared he is “very unhappy” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and has set a 50-day deadline for Russia to reach a ceasefire deal with Ukraine.
If that doesn’t occur, he has suggesting ruinously high tariffs will be imposed on Russia to try to bring the conflict to an end.
Mr Trump also said the US will send more weapons to help Ukraine in its fight.
He made the announcement in On Monday, US time, alongside NATO secretary-general Mark Rutte in Washington DC.
Multiple times throughout the day, the President brought up the role his wife, Melania Trump, played as his frustration with Putin built.
Meanwhile, leading figures in the MAGA media ecosystem continue to argue about the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.
One on-air clash today, between SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly and podcaster Ben Shapiro, involved the trustworthiness of the government.
Mr Shapiro indicated he is satisfied with Trump officials’ explanation for why it will neither release more unseen Epstein-related documents nor pursue prosecutions against third parties. Ms Kelly, citing anonymous sources “high up” in law enforcement, sought to elevate the theories that Epstein did not kill himself and was “an agent” for a foreign government.
“I mean, that’s fine, then they should come out and they should say that. And then they should say who’s covering that up,” Mr Shapiro said of her sources.
“Ben, they can’t. I mean, there are a lot of people who say they can’t, right? They can’t. Because let’s look at what the administration is saying right now. They don’t want to be the one to cross Trump,” Ms Kelly said.
A minutes-long debate followed, which culminated in an exasperated Mr Shapiro asking “are you kidding” and declaring Ms Kelly should “give me a break”.
Read on for more details on that, and all the other most recent updates.
