US Election Live Blog: Donald Trump and Elon Musk accuse UK of foreign interference

Prime Minister Keir Starmer went into damage control after a bombshell complaint to the Federal Election Commission over ‘the UK Labour Party’s blatant’ attempts to boost Kamala Harris.

Starmer insists Trump relationship not in jeopardy amid interference claims

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer went into damage control after Donald Trump filed an official complaint of “blatant foreign interference” over the Labour Party’s attempts to boost Kamala Harris.

Mr Starmer insisted a “good relationship” remained with Mr Trump despite the former president’s legal filing to the US Federal Election Commission alleging “illegal foreign national contributions” to Ms Harris.

It comes after a Labour Party official announced “nearly 100” members would campaign for the Harris campaign in four key swing states, including Mr Starmer’s new chief of staff Morgan McSweeney.

“When representatives of the British government previously sought to go door-to-door in America, it did not end well for them,” the Trump campaign said in a statement, referencing the American War of Independence.

Mr Starmer said the Labour Party members were travelling to the United States as “volunteers” as they had done in previous elections.

“They’re doing it in their spare time, they’re doing it as volunteers, they’re staying, I think, with other volunteers over there,” he said.

He denied that the move would damage relations with the US if Mr Trump returns to the White House; despite the efforts of the UK foreign nationals to ensure Ms Harris becomes the next US president.

Trump surrogate Elon Musk, meanwhile, wrote on his X site that “this is war” after leaked documents from campaign group Center for Countering Digital Hate appeared to show that one of its objectives was to “kill Musk’s Twitter”, X’s former name.

The campaign group and think-tank is led by a former Labour adviser and Mr Starmer’s chief of staff, Mr McSweeney, who is advising the Harris campaign and organized the Labour volunteers to campaign against Mr Trump.
