Donald Trump has launched an extraordinary attack on Meghan Markle for using the Royal family to push her political agenda on the United States and ruining Prince Harry’s relationship with the Queen in the process.
The former president said the Duchess of Sussex was “very inappropriate” to use her title in an attempt to influence US politics in what is considered a dramatic breach of the monarchy’s norms.
“I’m not a fan of hers. I wasn’t from day one. I think Harry has been used horribly and I think some day he will regret it,” Mr Trump said in a preview of an upcoming interview with the UK’s GBNews.
“I think Harry’s been used and been used terribly. I think it’s ruined his relationship with his family, and it hurts the Queen.”
Buckingham Palace has warned about Meghan using her Duchess of Sussex title out of context, with senior officials telling the Times UK it was “outrageous” to lobby US politicians for paid family leave
Interviewer Nigel Farage, the former UK politician who lead the country’s Brexit push, asked Mr Trump what he thought about Meghan using the Duchess of Sussex title on lobbying correspondence to members of Congress.
“She is trying to do things that I think are very inappropriate,” Mr Trump said.
“I think she’s been very disrespectful to the Queen, who’s such a great woman, such a great person, a historic person. I think she’s very disrespectful to the Royal Family and most importantly to the Queen,” he added.
Meghan’s involvement in US politics has increased since she left Britain in what observers speculate is the beginning of a potential presidential bid.
Mr Trump has previously welcomed the idea of Meghan running in 2024, saying he would have even stronger feelings towards running again.
“I think that what she talks about the Royal Family and the Queen, and I happen to think, I know the Queen as you know, I met with the Queen and I think the Queen is a tremendous person and I am not a fan of Meghan,” he told Fox News.
“I wish a lot of luck to Harry, because he’s gonna need it.”
