She is one of the most polarising royal identities. Now, Sarah Ferguson – aka “Fergie” – has revealed why she was left out of a major royal event.

Sarah Ferguson has opened up about not being invited to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding, revealing she felt she was “not worthy”.

The Duchess of York recalled being left out of the 2011 event, telling Town & Country magazine that she decided to leave England at the time to avoid attention.

“I didn’t think I was probably worthy to go to their wedding,” Ferguson told the magazine, per the New York Post.

“I took myself to Thailand, actually, to be far away from it so that I could try and heal.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s nuptials took place shortly after Ferguson was captured on video promising a tabloid reporter access to ex-husband Prince Andrew in exchange for $US700,000 (around $A947,000).

Ferguson – also known by her nickname, “Fergie” – and the royal family appeared to have made amends, as she attended Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding in 2018.

“It was very kind of them, and I can’t thank them enough for doing that because it was nerve-racking,” Ferguson said on Good Morning Britain shortly after the nuptials. Ferguson is clearly on good terms with Harry and Meghan, who revealed in the couple’s tell-all with Oprah Winfrey that Ferguson had helped her prepare for her first meeting with Queen Elizabeth.

The Duchess of York would no disuccs Markle and Harry’s departure from the Firm — dubbed Megxit — except to say the late Princess Diana would approve of her sons’ lives.

“I believe that (Princess) Diana would be so proud of her boys … and she’d be so proud of her grandchildren,” Ferguson told previously People.

“If she were sitting with me right now, I know she would say, ‘I am so proud of both of my boys and the wonderful wives they have chosen,’” she added.

“Because each has got her own voice.”

Fergie, who is about to release a romance novel titled Her Heart For A Compass, reflected on the way British tabloids portrayed her during the height of her time as a royal, and the scandals that followed.

“I don’t want to say it’s going to be a reassessment of Fergie or a reinvention,” Ferguson told Town and Country.

“Fergie is so steadfast that she will always be here.

“She’s still with me, that person who thinks she’s fat, ugly, and disgusting, and she still has to have her hair done to talk to you, but she’s now not so vocal,” Ferguson added.

“The truth is, I am 61 years old and I’m free of the self-sabotaging Sarah.”

Sarah Ferguson’s first novel, Her Heart For A Compass, will be available in Australia from August 4, published by HarperCollins Australia.
