A New Zealand farmer has turned one of his fields into an elaborate farewell message to mark the end of Jacinda Ardern’s prime ministership.
Vegetable grower Rodney Ng, whose property sits under a flight path into Auckland Airport, made his feelings about Ms Ardern clear by mowing the giant words ‘End of an error’ into a field, the Daily Mail reports.
Mr Ng said it took three people about seven hours to mow the massive letters, each roughly 40 metres in length.
The 40-year-old said he had been motivated by the “immense pressure” New Zealand’s farmers were under due to regulations introduced by Ms Ardern’s Labour government.
The measures include a “fart tax” on carbon emissions from livestock.
“The fart tax is a hard one for beef and dairy but there are many,” Mr Ng told the Daily Mail.
“The mental health of many New Zealand farmers has been a big concern over the last few years.
“We’re under a lot of pressure with increasing regulations and new legislations.”
The third generation farmer said the response to his message had been “very positive”.
In his social media posts, Mr Ng included hashtags to Groundswell NZ, a group of farmers protesting against “unworkable regulations”.
He also shared a video showing the process of mowing the rotation cover crop, with captions.
One caption, directed at Ms Ardern, read: “Hey Cindy, the farmers of NZ would like to wish you all the best!”
Another caption said: “We can all celebrate now. You were one of a kind that’s for sure.”
Ms Ardern’s popularity dropped in New Zealand due to soaring house prices, tough Covid-19 measures and rampant crime.
She will be formally replaced as prime minister by former police and Covid response minister Chris Hipkins on Wednesday
