Speculation is mounting that Donald Trump will pardon Jeffrey Epstein’s girlfriend and fellow sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell in exchange for her “revealing” a long list of Democrats and “clearing” the President of being involved with the pedophile.
It comes after the notorious sex criminal answered questions during two days of interrogation from Justice Department officials about “100 different people” linked to Epstein.
At an impromptu press conference in Glasgow on Saturday, Mr Trump said he had the power to pardon her.
“I’m allowed to do it, but it’s something I haven’t thought about,” he said, before sensation ally offering reporters “a list” of Epstein associates.
“You should focus on (Bill) Clinton. You should focus on the former president of Harvard (Larry Summers), you should focus on some of the hedge fund guys. I’ll give you a list,” Mr Trump said.
“You ought to be speaking about (former president) Bill Clinton, who went to there (Epstein’s private isle in the US Virgin Islands) 28 times. I never went to the island.”
It has previously been reported that Mr Trump flew on Epstein’s plane, dubbed the “Lolita Express”, seven times.
The President also said he wasn’t worried Deputy Attorney-General Todd Blanche, who has been interviewing Ms Maxwell, could be “misled”.
This is despite the judge in her trial finding she lied under oath and threatening to charge her with perjury.
Mr Trump also addressed a bawdy note he purportedly wrote in 2003 to Epstein on the occasion of the financier’s 50th birthday, saying: “Somebody could have written a letter and used my name.”
This is a letter exposed by the Wall Street Journal. At the time, Mr Trump called it “fake” and is suing the publication for $A15bn.
Fake AI-generated photos and videos purporting to show Mr Trump and Epstein socialising with underage girls have flooded social media, racking up millions of views.
Mr Trump – frequently photographed with Epstein during their 15-year friendship – is attempting to put a lid on the issue, which has split his Republican base.
Maxwell’s lawyer, David Markus, said she was asked about “everything” and “answered every single question” during the second day of questioning in a Florida prison.
He said Maxwell, who is serving 20 years, “has been treated unfairly for over five years now” and described her as a “scapegoat”. Clemency had not been offered to her yet, he said. When she was arrested, Mr Trump said he would “wish her well”.
Mr Markus told reporters: “The truth will come out about what happened with Mr Epstein and she’s the person who’s answering those questions.”
Maxwell, 63, is appealing her conviction and sentencing, and legal observers have speculated her willingness to answer questions is tied to a potential clemency grant.
Her lawyer described Mr Trump as “the ultimate dealmaker”.
“We hope he exercises that power in a right and just way,” Mr Markus added.
Maxwell reportedly initiated the sitdowns with the DOJ and answered questions for roughly nine hours, according to ABC News.
In 2022, the Department of Justice expressed doubts that Maxwell could be truthful, writing in court filings that she displayed a “significant pattern of dishonest conduct” and failed to take responsibility for her heinous crimes.
Court papers the prior year revealed that prosecutors never seriously entertained the prospect of offering the women dubbed “Epstein’s madam” a plea agreement after the financier was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell while awaiting his own federal trial.
