US President Donald Trump is understood to be considering introducing a new three-tiered travel ban, which would target citizens of up to 43 countries across the world.
The first group countries are on a “red list”, including Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen would be set for a full visa suspension, The New York Times reports.
In another group, nations on the “orange list” including Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Turkmenistan would face partial suspensions.
This would affect tourist and student visas and some immigrant visas.
The rest of the list includes countries on a “yellow list” such as Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Republic of the Congo, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Vanuatu and Zimbabwe.
These countries would face a partial suspension from their citizens being granted a US visa if their governments “do not make efforts to address deficiencies within 60 days”.
A US official speaking on the condition of anonymity also told The New York Times and Reuters there could be changes to the list, which was yet to be approved by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Talk of a new travel ban comes after Mr Trump previously passed three executive orders that came to be known as a Muslim ban, which prevented travel to the US from Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Syria.
These travel bans were lifted by former President Joe Biden following in January 2021.
Trump’s new directive comes after his administration has heavily cracked down on immigration since his second term began.
