Hamas hails Albo’s ‘courage’ after Palestine move

The Opposition has lashed Anthony Albanese after a Hamas spokesman celebrated Australia’s vow to recognise Palestinian statehood, while hailing the PM’s “courage”.

Explained: What Australia's recognition of Palestine means

Hamas has hailed Anthony Albanese’s move to recognise a Palestinian state, saying the decision has vindicated the terror group’s October 7 terror attack on Israel.

In a statement to Nine Newspapers, Hamas co-founder Hassan Yousef said he welcomed Australia’s decision to recognise a Palestinian state and rejected calls for the terror group to put down its arms.

The development has angered the Opposition, with Senator Michaelia Cash saying it was a sad day for the nation and that the PM should “hang his head in shame”.

In his statement, Hassan Yousef said: “We welcome Australia’s decision to recognise the state of Palestine, and consider it an important step towards achieving justice for our people and securing their legitimate rights,” Yousef said.

“This position reflects political courage and a commitment to the values of justice and the right of peoples to self-determination.

“We call on all countries, especially those that believe in freedom and human dignity, to follow Australia’s example and translate their positions into practical steps to support the Palestinian people and end their suffering under occupation.”
