Donald Trump rally: US President-elect arrives in DC ahead of Inauguration Day, Trump crypto plummets

Donald Trump’s meme coin, $TRUMP, surged overnight but has pulled back considerably with some calling it a ‘rug pull’.

Donald Trump has held a much-hyped political rally in the American capital, Washington D.C., less than 24 hours before he becomes president for the second time.

Mr Trump, who won November’s election against the current Vice President Kamala Harris, will take power in the early hours of tomorrow morning, Australian time, after the traditional pomp and ceremony.

Today he held an event today, called the “Make America Great Again Victory Rally”, inside Washington’s Capitol One Arena.

The pre-inauguration rally saw Mr Trump deliver his first major speech in Washington since his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to stop his defeat to Joe Biden from being certified.

The event included a performance by The Village People, whose hit from the 1970s, YMCA, is a Trump staple. Also performing were Kid Rock and Billy Ray Cyrus.

Mr Trump will spend the night at Blair House — across from the Executive Mansion he’ll call home for the next four years — and take tea on Monday morning with the outgoing president, Mr Biden, before heading to the Capitol.

In recent years, presidents have been sworn in from an enormous temporary platform on the Capitol’s scenic West Lawn. This year, it will take place inside in the Capitol Rotunda due to the very, very cold weather.
