BYRON Bay woman Sara Connor, who is facing her first Christmas behind bars on murder charges in Bali, is “very sad” and not coping well but she and her British boyfriend will support each other.
David Taylor, who faced another day of his murder trial in the Denpasar District Court on Wednesday, gave some insight into the couple’s feelings as he spoke about their plans for Christmas in Kerobokan Jail.
And he reiterated that his girlfriend had nothing to do with the police officer’s murder, for which they are both charged and facing 15 years in jail.
Taylor has previously indicated that he will testify that Connor was not involved in the fight that killed Wayan Sudarsa and today he remained resolute.
He admits the fight but says his role was in self-defence.
Taylor, 34, told News Corp that the couple would attend church services in the jail on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
He said it felt strange to be in jail and that his 46-year-old girlfriend and co-accused, was not coping well and was very sad.
Connor has not seen her two children since being arrested in August this year, along with Taylor, on charges of murdering the veteran police officer.
But Taylor said the couple remained solid and would support each other throughout.
Asked how Connor was coping, Taylor said: ‘Not very well, she is very sad … everyone is angry and saddened or upset but we will stand by each other throughout.”
Taylor says he wants the truth to come out.
“I hope that the truth will come out and the indictment clearly states that I was only acting in self-defence and Sara Connor had nothing to do with it, she shouldn’t be involved,” Taylor said.
“Again I am extremely sorry and saddened towards the family, everyone involved in this case, especially the family of the victim.
“It’s a terrible accident, it never should have happened. It was purely self-defence for me.”
Taylor said that when he left the police officer on the beach that night he was still alive and breathing.
At Wednesday’s trial the prosecution had summoned eight witnesses to appear but only one turned up — a police officer who took the call about a body on the beach.
One of the prosecution’s main eye witnesses, a hotel security guard who witnessed part of the fight between Taylor and the officer, has been called to testify on numerous occasions but has not shown up in court.
Connor’s trial resumes in the Denpasar District Courton Thursday where the prosecutor has summoned 10 witnesses.
