Sinead McNamara: Family lawyer demanding answers over Aussie model’s death

THE lawyer for Sinead McNamara’s family says he may have to travel to where she died in order to find out what happened to the 20-year-old model.

The final tragic moments of Aussie model Sinead McNamara revealed

THE Greek lawyer representing the family of Australian Sinead McNamara says he might have to visit the island where she died as part of an investigation into her death.

Lawyer Charalambos Triantafyllopoulos released an extraordinary statement on behalf of the family on Thursday, revealing the Instagram model had called them shortly before she was found entangled, unconscious in ropes on the Mayan Queen IV super yacht.

When News Corp asked him whether the incident was suspicious, he said he had no further details.

“I am hoping the authorities will (have more details) and we will also wait for the toxicologicals and histological results (from the coroner),” he said.

Mr Triantafyllopoulos said the family had flown home to Australia but would not say when or comment on whether Ms McNamara’s body was still in Athens.

He also said he had no access to the CCTV footage from the vessel.

The model, from Port Macquarie, had been working on the six-storey yacht which was docked in the port of Argostoli, Kefalonia before she died on August 31.

In the statement, her mother Kylie McNamara and brother said she had called them crying shortly before she was fatally injured, to tell them about an “incident” with another crew member.

The family said their daughter had been “happy” during her overseas working holiday and had been in contact with them.

The family is now demanding Greek authorities investigate her death.

“For these reasons, the family finds it crucial to thoroughly investigate both the conditions of death and the events and incidents that preceded this event in order for the full truth to be revealed and find out what actually happened that led their 20-year-old daughter to death,” the lawyer said in the statement.

The family also wants to know why she was not transferred to hospital sooner.

It comes after Greek coroner Elias Bogiokas told News Corp that suicide was the most likely reason behind the tragedy, with hanging found to be the cause of death.

However it may take up to a month for toxicology reports to come back.

The Port Authority of Kefalonia is still investigating her death and confirmed there was CCTV vision from the yacht.

Andri, a waiter at Compass Cafe in the port where the boat was docked, said bystanders had told him Ms McNamara had been “hanged by the buoys.’’

The Mayan Queen IV, like all yachts, is protected by buoys lining the outside of its hull when it is in port.

However there has been no confirmation if the buoys were in place when Ms McNamara died.

The waiter said Ms McNamara’s devastated crew mates were “distressed and crying’’ when they visited Compass Cafe.

When he asked them what was wrong, they told him they were upset because their colleague had died.

Andri said he asked what had happened and if there had been something “wrong” with Ms McNamara.

He said the crew mates replied: “No, she was happy.’’

The yacht is owned by Mexican billionaire Alberto Bailleres, however he reportedly left the vessel several days before the incident.
