At least six people have been killed in a shooting incident at a food market in Bangkok, a police official has confirmed.
According to Reuters, the Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Charin Gopatta, said the gunman took his own life.
His death was included in the total number of fatalities.
“Police are investigating the motive. So far it’s a mass shooting,” Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bangkok’s Bang Sue district where the incident took place, told AFP.
Sukthai said police were working to identify who the suspect is, and investigating if there is a link with the shooting and the border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.
Local media reported five security guards were killed at Or Tor Kor market while another person has been wounded.
National police chief Kitrat Phanphet said an urgent investigation had been ordered, with officers combing CCTV footage of the attack.
Or Tor Kor Market is a short distance from Chatuchak market which is a major tourist destination in Bangkok and throngs with visitors every weekend.
Mass shootings are not uncommon in Thailand, where firearms can be obtained relatively easily due to lax gun control enforcement.
