9/11 in pictures: 15 year anniversary

IT’S been 15 years since the world watched on in horror as the worst terror attack in US history unfolded. The pictures are just as shocking today.

September 11, 2001

SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.

It’s a date that needs little explanation for those who survived it or watched it unfold in the Unites States from afar, even 15 years on.

Almost 3000 innocent people died when terrorists hijacked four commercial planes and ploughed them into the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Centre; the Pentagon in Washington and an open field in Pennsylvania, on the morning of September 11, 2001.

The world watched on in horror as the worst terror attack to strike the US unfolded before their eyes. Footage of the planes smashing into the twin towers before smoke and flames billowed from the windows was broadcast live. The images that followed were just as shocking.

Some people trapped inside the buildings jumped to their deaths as the smoke and flames engulfed them. Blood-soaked survivors emerged from the collapsing structures only to be coated in thick dust and ash. Emergency services, including many brave firefighters, stormed towards the danger as those who could came rushing out of the twin towers. The heroes had entered in a bid to rescue trapped survivors but many of them lost their own lives as the towers came crashing down.

Thousands of people ran for their lives through the streets until mounds of debris and broken steel that once formed the frame of the city’s tallest buildings were all that remained of the twin towers. Scenes at the Pentagon were just as chaotic as emergency services fought to contain the blaze caused by the plane which had been flown into the building. Passengers on-board the plane that crashed into an open field in Pennsylvania were praised for taking on the terrorists and stopping them from reaching the White House. All on-board were killed but if it wasn’t for the passengers’ efforts, the death toll could have been much higher. It’s stories of humanity like this that offered hope to many in the wake of the unforgettable tragedy that is now known simply as ‘9/11’.
