Shocking footage has emerged of a driver drifting across the front of a southern Brisbane aquarium, before crashing into a supporting pole and collapsing the front awning.
The video captured at 5.50pm on Saturday shows a white Holden lose control and hit a supporting pole in front of Annerley Aquarium, before driving away from the scene.
The pole obliterated into several pieces while the Holden collected only a dent on its front-right.
Nobody was in the store at the time of the crash.
Police allege the vehicle continued to travel along Old Cleveland Road towards Lilly St.
Sandra “Sandy” Ponting, who has co-owned the store with her husband Peter since 1983, said the business would have to take a lot of steps to bring the awning back to its feet.
“They’ll have to pull down the awning structurally rather than prop it up,” Ms Ponting said.
“Once that’s all done, it’s a matter of assessors coming out and taking it from there.
“It will be a building site, I guess.”
The Holden narrowly missed the display window fish tank which contained a 20-year-old Gourami fish worth $1500.
Annerley Aquarium continued trading on Sunday with customers directed to enter the store from the back gate.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident or anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage of the white Holden ute in the lead-up to or following the crash.
