Snow will again adorn one of Hobart’s Christmas lights display, with the help of Christmas spirit and council mediation.
A snow machine had become a focal point for Giancarlo (Johnny) Rigoli’s Molle Street home, turning his ambitious Christmas lights display into a true white Christmas.
Following public backlash and disappointment in Hobart City Council’s directive to switch off the machine at 6pm each evening, Council is allowing Mr Rigoli to use the machine until 9pm each weekday and on Christmas Eve, and until 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
“Johnny’s Christmas lights display has become one of our must-see attractions in the lead up to Christmas and has grown hugely in popularity,” Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.
“I’d like to thank Council’s hardworking staff for their efforts to find a neighbourly compromise and support for the festive spirit in Hobart.”
Hobart City Council contacted the resident behind the noise complaint to resolve the matter, with Council reporting both Mr Rigoli and the resident “satisfied” with the outcome.
Mr Rigoli said it’s a “good way” to finish the last week of his Christmas display.
“It’s nice that people who will visit in the lead-up to Christmas can appreciate the snow and I’m happy council went to that extra effort,” he said.
“People coming up after 6pm had said they were disappointed to not see the snow.”
There was no mention of the plans for the snow machine at next year’s display, but Mr Rigoli hopes to find a solution over the next year.
“It gives me a bit of time at least to find an alternative – maybe a quieter machine or a noise-cancelling – I’ll have to get thinking about it,” he said.
