When is takeaway food not takeaway? When you have to sit down to eat it.

Sure, you could attempt to devour a gyros, otherwise known as a yeeros, standing up, but that’s just asking for trouble.

Set on the corner of busy Forest Rd in Bexley, Gyradiko is far from flash — tiled floors, a counter and a help-yourself drinks fridge. But it doesn’t need much more; it serves simple street food done well.

Grab one of the outdoor seats — it’s hot inside — and take the time to appreciate the warm, pillowy bread rolled into a cone and overflowing with chunks of meat cooked on the spit, spice-seasoned chips, a punchy tzatziki that’s heavy on the garlic, and a smattering of tomato and onion.

If you’ve never eaten hot chips stuffed inside a gyros, you need to get to Bexley, quick smart.

Choose between chicken and pork on the spit or pork souvlaki stuffed into a gyros ($9), get a gyros, chip and drink combo ($14) or go for a merides ($19), a main, and get a plate overflowing with meat, chips, salad, pita and tzatziki.
