’We want to apologise to our two beautiful daughters,’ say sorry Huegills as cocaine couple get good behaviour bonds

GEOFF Huegill and his wife Sara, pictured arriving at court today, have been handed six-month good behaviour bonds for cocaine possession at Randwick racecourse.

Ex-swimming star Geoff Huegill has made a public apology after being allegedly caught with cocaine.

OLYMPIC swimmer Geoff Huegill and his wife Sara Hills have apologised, in particular to their children, after pleading guilty to drug charges.

In Waverley Local Court yesterday they were each sentenced to a six-month good behaviour bond, with no conviction, for possessing cocaine after being spotted at Randwick Racecourse last month entering a disabled toilet together.

Outside court, Huegill said the couple “want to apologise to all the people we have let down over the past couple of weeks”.

“We recognise that with our actions there are going to be consequences,” he said.

“The two most important people who we want to apologise to are our two beautiful daughters. We realise that while they are quite young at the moment, at some stage in the future we are going to have to have this conversation with our girls and hopefully their lives aren’t going to be affected as well.”

Huegill, 35, and Hill, 30, were spotted on CCTV cameras entering the disabled toilet at Randwick on April 26. Police told the court that officers later approached Huegill, who admitted to having cocaine in his wallet.

Huegill phoned his wife, who joined them and also “owned up” to having cocaine in her bag.

The couple’s lawyer, Dean Woodbury, told the court they were remorseful for their actions and were “here to face the consequences”. “It wasn’t like they were flashing it around. This occurred in a private area,” Mr Woodbury said.

“Mr and Mrs Huegill were co-operative with police. In fact, Mrs Huegill actually came after Mr Huegill was with police and told them that she had some drugs on her. She had an opportunity to dispose of it but she didn’t.”

Police said each bag contained less than 1g of the white powder. Mr Woodbury described the couple as loving parents and said they would suffer financi-ally after Huegill was subsequently stripped of sponsorship roles.

“He’s already lost opportunities. There’s no doubt that what he has done is going to affect him financially for the rest of his life,” Mr Woodbury said.

Magistrate Clare Farnan said it was a “mystery” as to why the couple would be in possession of the drugs, given that they had “so much to lose”.

“It’s disturbing that someone who is looked up to by members of the community, particularly young members of the community, chose to behave in this way,” Ms Farnan said.

Outside court, the glamorous couple said they were relieved the matter had finally been dealt with and added that they would need to “earn back” the trust and respect of the community after the offence.
