As the nation gears up to pause this Friday to mark the 110th anniversary of landing at Gallipoli, here’s everything you need to know about Anzac Day in Victoria.
When is the public holiday?
This Friday is a public holiday in Victoria, meaning anyone working is entitled to public holiday penalty rates. Under Victorian law, Anzac Day is a restricted trading day which means certain businesses are required to cease trading between 12.01am and 1pm.
Stores exempt from the restricted trading Act include essential services such as medical clinics, chemists and petrol stations - as well as restaurants, cafes and takeaway outlets - and are permitted to operate within regular trading hours.

What supermarkets are open on Anzac Day?
Closing times for each supermarket chain and their local stores may vary but majority of Victorian supermarkets will commence trading at 1pm on Friday.
Woolworths - Open from 1pm
Coles - Open from 1pm
Aldi - Majority of stores will be open from 1pm, however shoppers are advised to check their local stores for trading hours
IGA - Majority of stores will be open from 1pm however some stores may operate with limited hours
South Melbourne Market, Prahran Market & the Queen Victoria Market will all be closed on Anzac Day
What bottle shops are open on Anzac Day?
Dan Murphy’s - Open from 1pm
Liquorland - Open from 1pm, although some stores may have limited trading hours
BWS - Open from 1pm
What shopping centres are open on Anzac Day?
Chadstone - Open from 1pm

What department stores/hardware stores are open on Anzac Day?
Big W - open with limited trading hours
Kmart - Open from 1pm

What public transport is running on Anzac Day?
PTV are running extra trams, trains and buses on Friday to assist those travelling to Dawn Services across the state. Veterans, War Widows, ADF members, Scouts, Guides and school students in uniform are permitted to travel on Victoria’s public transport network for free on Anzac Day.
What cinemas are open on Anzac Day?
Hoyts, Palace, Village and Classic Cinemas will each commence operating at 1pm.
What banks and post offices are open on Anzac Day?
Banks and Post Offices traditionally remain closed on public holidays, so they will not be open this Anzac Day.
