Victorian seniors will be able to travel free on public transport on weekends right across the public transport network from January 1 – saving them up to $360 each year.
Under existing rules, seniors can travel free on weekends but only for two neighbouring zones – such as within metropolitan Melbourne or between Macedon and Woodend.
The new changes would allow a Melbourne-based grandmother to visit family in a regional city such as Geelong or Ballarat.
To be eligible for a Seniors myki you must have a Victorian Seniors Card. Victorian Seniors Card holders must be permanent residents of Victoria, aged 60 or over and work less than 35 hours a week.
Premier Jacinta Allan said she was focused on providing cost of living relief for Victorians.
“Costs can add up – especially for seniors – and I’m on their side,” Ms Allan said
“That’s why we’re making public transport free on weekends for seniors, saving them more than $360 every year.”
Public Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams said: “We’ve added hundreds more weekend services and now we’re making it free for seniors to travel on the weekend – making public transport an even better option, whether it’s for a trip to see family or to explore Victoria.”
While seniors won’t be charged, passengers will still be required to touch on their Myki, and carry their senior’s Card.
The expanded free travel for seniors program will be funded through the 2025-26 Budget.
Seniors will also continue to be eligible for a 50 per cent full-fare weekday discount.
