A man accused of fatally stabbing another man during a fight in Ascot Vale has appeared in court with a cut to the back of the head and suffering a concussion.

Police say three men got into an argument at a property on Churchill Avenue about 4am on Saturday before David Anyuon, 36, from Ascot Vale was fatally stabbed.

Crews arrived to find Mr Anyuon seriously injured with stab wounds, before he died a short time later at the scene.

On Monday afternoon, Makuaj Anyoun, 29, also from Ascot Vale, briefly appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court charged with murder and assaulting another man.

It remains unclear if the two men are related.

His lawyer said his client had a cut to the back of his head and could still be affected by concussion.

The court heard it was Makuaj’s first time in custody.

He was remanded to reappear in court on August 18.

Detective Acting Inspector Andrew Foot said that three people were involved in the initial confrontation were known to each other.

“It was a family relationship but I am not prepared to go any further than that,” he said.

A crime scene has been established and investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
