Shocking footage emerges of St Kilda machete attack

A 15-year-old boy accused of a terrifying machete attack and armed robbery in St Kilda will remain behind bars following his first court appearance.

Police allege the teen and a female accomplice approached a 39-year-old man on Barkly St on Sunday night, demanding he hand over his car keys and trying to snatch his phone.

When the man refused, the boy allegedly struck him to the head with the machete before the pair fled empty-handed.

The boy was arrested at Southern Cross railway station about 12.30pm Monday.

He was charged with armed robbery, intentionally causing serious injury, assault with a weapon and possession of a controlled weapon.

The boy briefly faced a children’s court on Tuesday where it was revealed he had spent time in custody before and had a number of health conditions, including an intellectual disability.

His lawyer said her client would apply for bail next week.

The alleged female offender — who police say had dark hair, was wearing a white hoodie with a black Hoodrich puffer vest, and black pants — is still at large.

The boy was remanded in custody and will return to court next week.

The alleged attack was caught on camera by a 7News reporter who happened to be in the area.

He can be heard asking “is it plastic” as someone else comments “I can’t tell if it’s real or not”.

Witnesses to the attack, Gurvir Grewal, confirmed the severity of the situation to reporters and explained how he helped the victim.

“The machete was huge,” he said. “Literally to my elbow size. The guy was yelling ‘give me the keys’.

“I was trying to stop the blood and they (triple-000 operators) were giving me direction. He was anxious but he was talking.”

The footage shows the victim being struck in the back of the head, before two people make a getaway on foot.

The victim can then be seen wrapping his shirt around his head in an effort to stop the bleeding.

Witness Louis Clay told 7News the wound was nasty.

“It would have been several centimetres long and quite deep,” he said. “Like a deep gash to the back of his head.”

The alleged female offender, a 19 year old Reservoir woman, self presented to police on Tuesday afternoon and was released without charge.
