Man aged in 60s shot after multiple offenders break into Gladstone Park home

Up to five offenders are on the run after a man was stabbed and shot during a horror home invasion in Melbourne’s northwest.

A 60-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries after he was shot during a targeted home invasion in Melbourne’s northwest.

Emergency services were called to Trentham Drive in Gladstone Park responding to reports of a home invasion and the assault of two occupants about 1.25am on Thursday.

Victoria Police said a 60-year-old man suffered “serious injuries consistent with a gunshot wound”.

Officers were told the group also threatened a 57-year-old woman with a gun, however she was not injured.

“It is believed the male resident confronted the group before the offenders discharged a firearm at him and assaulted him with weapons,” Acting Sergeant Darcie Sword said.

The offenders fled the scene in a white Haval SUV.

Investigators believe the incident was targeted.

Up to five offenders, wearing hoods and face coverings, were on Thursday evening on the run.

They tried to access the home through the front door but were unsuccessful before entering through the rear.

They are believed to have been armed with a hammer, knives and a gun.

The 60-year-old man was then shot in the arm.

The onslaught lasted between five and 10 minutes.

“An assault has then occurred, quite a graphic assault,” Detective Inspector Adam Tilley said.

“To be woken by five offenders, let alone (for them) to be armed with a firearm, knives and also a hammer, is extremely concerning to us, and that’s why we’re really seeking the public’s support.”

The man was hit with the hammer “numerous times” and “repeatedly stabbed” across his body.

“He also, during this incident, sustained a gunshot wound to his arm,” Insp. Tilley added.

The gang then asked “where’s the money” to the severely injured man.

They then went into the woman’s bedroom where she was nearly shot at.

“Threats were made to her as well and the firearm was produced and pointed at her,” he added.

The victim on Thursday remained at the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries.

The gang demanded the whereabouts of another man known to the couple.

That man does not live at the address targeted.

That man is known to police, who “fear for his safety”.

Police confirmed they are attempting to warn that man and his partner of an imminent threat.

“We’re making inquiries into him and his current whereabouts,” Insp. Tilley added.

Dramatic CCTV captured the moment intruders entered the home before shooting the 60-year-old man.

The footage shows a car pulling up outside the home just after 1.20am, before multiple people approach the front door minutes later and a dog begins barking.

One person appears to exit the home minutes later, with shouting and loud bangs heard echoing through the residential street shortly after.

A scuffle appears to break out on the front porch of the home before multiple people are seen running back to the parked car and speeding away from the scene.

Time passes before bloodcurdling screams and calls for “help” are heard from the house just before 1.40am, with emergency services arriving minutes later.

Neighbour Terry said he and his wife knew something was wrong after hearing screams in the middle of the night.

“We heard some banging (and) weren’t too sure what it was,” he said.

“We thought it was a dog, and then all of a sudden we heard loud noises (and) someone saying ‘help, help, help’.”

Terry said he then “bolted” outside, where neighbours rallied and called triple-0 before being told to return inside their homes.

Another neighbour said while he didn’t hear anything, his daughter had been “up all night” after hearing the commotion unfold.

“She heard screaming and yelling,” he said.

“We don’t normally hear anything from that house either, they’re pretty quiet.”

He said it was a “very unusual” incident for their typically “quiet” neighbourhood.

“I’m a shift worker and I often get home at 1am and normally all you can hear is the odd car going down the freeway,” he said.

Belinda Bannister has lived two doors down for five years, and said she was “shocked” to hear about the home invasion this morning.

“I’ve never walked out to experience something like this so I’m pretty devastated,” she said.

While she never noticed a man living at the home, Ms Bannister said a woman lived there who was always “friendly”.

“I’ve never seen anything go on there,” she said.

“She’s a friendly lady who works at the local shopping centre … she’s always polite, says hello and smiles, but we don’t interact much more past that.”

Ms Bannister shared the same sentiment as many other neighbours, who described the incident as “unusual” for the area.

“It’s a very quiet street so it’s very unusual,” she said.

“(The neighbours) don’t mix a lot but people look out for each other.

Ms Bannister said she was anxious to go to work on Thursday morning and leave her mother at home alone.

“I said to mum ‘keep the doors locked’ because it’s pretty scary,” she said.

Forensic officers arrived at the scene just after 9.30am.

A crime scene had been established, with part of the quiet residential street between Carlinga Court and Lenoak St cordoned off with police tape.
