‘I heard shots’: Bullets fired from car outside Dallas school

Police have rushed to Hume Valley School in Melbourne’s north, which was placed into lockdown after gunshots were fired from a car into another vehicle.

Bullets have been fired from a car outside a suburban school in Melbourne’s north.

A crime scene was established around the Hume Valley School in Dallas, near Broadmeadows, on Thursday after several shots were blasted just before 10.30am.

Two vehicles were seen driving erratically along Koroit Avenue before several bullets were fired from one of the vehicles into the back of the other car.

The two vehicles sped off and on Thursday afternoon had not yet been found.

The shots were fired just metres from students at the nearby school, which was placed into an immediate lockdown.

“I heard shots, I reckon there were four or five,” one nearby resident told the Herald Sun.

“At the time I thought they were shots, but it was hard to say. Over the decades there were always sounds.

“It’s just absurd.”

Residents on Thursday evening told of their shock over the incident.

One woman, who said she had lived on Koroit St for more than 40 years, said she had never seen anything dramatic occur.

“I’ve been inside most of the day so I didn’t see or really hear anything that happened but there’s been lot’s of police around,” she said.

“It’s scary, especially with the school so close.”

Fellow Koroit Avenue resident Zeba Khan said she hadn’t seen the shooting but had heard recent arguments on the street.

She said her daughter saw an “intense” argument between two men and woman in the street the day before the shots were fired.

“My daughter saw there was fighting in the street, so I came outside to see what was happening.

“There were two cars parked out the front, and a lady maybe in her late 40s was arguing with two men.

“One was about her age and the other was in his 20s maybe.

“I couldn’t hear what they were saying but it looked pretty intense.”

The Hume Valley School, a specialist school catering for children with intellectual disabilities, remained closed on Thursday evening.

The Department of Education said support was available for both students and teachers affected.
