The father of a Melbourne footy star has allegedly been caught up in a violent brawl at a local football match.
The Herald Sun has been told that the father of Demons spearhead Bayley Fritsch was allegedly assaulted while watching Coldstream in the Eastern Football Netball League on Saturday.
Scott Fritsch, 57, was allegedly set upon while watching his son, Darcy, against Upper Ferntree Gully in the Division 3 clash late on Saturday afternoon.
Details of the alleged sideline assault remain vague but two sources told the Herald Sun it was the Melbourne forward’s father who was the intended target.
Police expect another man to be charged on summons.
“Police arrested a man following an assault at a local football match in Upper Ferntree Gully on Saturday, 31 May,” a statement read.
“Investigators were told that spectators were involved in a scuffle at a sporting ground on Willow Road about 4.45pm.
“A 57-year-old Coldstream man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
“A 44-year-old Seville man was interviewed and is expected to be charged on summons for intentionally cause injury and unlawful assault.”
The alleged assault appeared to have occurred moments before the final siren of the Division 3 clash between Coldstream and Upper Ferntree Gully.
Match footage shows a number of players and an official peering over to the broadcast side where it is understood to have taken place.
Footage of the match is cut after an Upper Ferntree Gully goal before the clip resumes with a Coldstream free kick.
The final siren blew just minutes later with at least one Upper Ferntree Gully midfielder appearing to discourage his teammates from getting involved.
The field umpire was then seen conversing with a Coldstream official as they exited the field, clearly pointing to the sidelines near where it had taken place.
It is not believed the altercation caused the match to end early, as was claimed on radio this morning.
Paramedics were not required to transport either of the men to hospital.
“Ambulance Victoria responded to calls to an incident in Upper Ferntree Gully at around 5:00pm on 31 May,” a statement read.
“No emergency transport was provided.”
The Fritsch family declined to comment when contacted on Tuesday.
Both clubs and the Eastern Football Netball League have been contacted for comment.
